Trauma & PTSD Therapy
Trauma is the lasting impact of experiences that overwhelm our ability to cope or leave us feeling threatened, helpless, or deeply unsafe. It can arise from a single event or from repeated experiences of abuse, neglect, loss, instability, or relational harm. Memories of these experiences can include not only what we consciously remember, but also learned associations with sensations, emotions, relationships, and danger. A sound, expression, conflict, or situation may trigger a racing heart, tension, numbness, shame, or an urge to withdraw—even when you know you are safe now. You may understand that the past is over while still feeling as though your body is preparing for it to happen again.
We approach this work gently and collaboratively, beginning with trust, grounding, and tools to help you feel more supported in the present. Talking can bring understanding and relief, yet insight alone may not fully change the reactions that happen before you have time to think. We combine verbal exploration with experiential approaches, such as EMDR, IFS, and guided awareness of emotions and body sensations, to help you work with these responses more directly.
Through this kind of processing, the brain can begin to hold painful experiences differently. Rather than simply knowing that the past is over, your nervous system can gradually experience that truth as well. In EMDR, for example, memories may become less emotionally charged while new understanding, protection, or compassion becomes connected to the experience. Sometimes this includes recognizing what a younger version of you could not have understood at the time or allowing an unmet attachment need to be responded to in a new way. The goal is not to erase the past, but to help it feel more clearly like the past so it has less power over the present.
Over time, this work can help you feel less controlled by old survival responses and more able to respond to the present with choice, connection, and self-compassion. We move at a pace that respects your nervous system and your readiness, with the goal of helping you feel safer not only in your thoughts, but in your body, relationships, and day-to-day life.
