Sometimes you can understand exactly why you feel or react the way you do, yet still find yourself responding emotionally or physically as though the past is happening in the present. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people process distressing experiences that continue to affect how they feel, think, and respond today.

During EMDR, you briefly bring aspects of a difficult memory to mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements or alternating taps. This process can help reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories and support new perspectives that may be difficult to access through insight or conversation alone.

EMDR isn’t about erasing what happened or convincing yourself that it didn’t matter. Rather, it helps you relate to the experience differently. You may still remember what happened, but it can begin to feel more firmly rooted in the past, rather than continuing to evoke the same fear, shame, helplessness, or physical distress in the present.

We may also use guided imagery to help you experience a sense of protection, comfort, or care that was missing during earlier painful experiences. Although these moments are imagined, the emotional responses they evoke can be real, offering opportunities for corrective emotional experiences that insight alone may not provide. For example, someone who grew up believing “I was too much” may begin to recognize that a parent’s struggles with alcoholism were never a reflection of their worth. Through this process, deeply held beliefs can shift, and earlier attachment wounds may become less painful and influential in the present.

We approach EMDR gently and collaboratively, with attention to preparation, trust, and your sense of safety. The pace is tailored to your needs, and you remain an active participant throughout the process. The goal isn’t simply to revisit painful experiences, but to help you move toward greater emotional freedom, self-compassion, and a more integrated sense of self.
